Accident, Sickness & Unemployment Insurance

Accident, Sickness & Unemployment insurance (ASU), can also be referred to as mortgage payment protection insurance and its purpose is to provide you with a monthly income to cover your mortgage and other associated outgoings if you are off work sick, have an accident or are made redundant.

 

The maximum payout tends to be 150% of your mortgage payments and most policies will pay out a maximum of 12 or 24 months in the event of a claim.

 

Most policies are very flexible, and you can choose whether you want to receive benefits for accident & sickness only, unemployment only or all three. This type of policy has a 'deferment period' which is the time you have to wait to start receiving benefits from the ASU policy after you have become ill, had an accident or become unemployed. A typical deferment period is 30 days.
